September 14, 2020 Meeting

This is Carol.  Carol is wearing layers.  Carol is being Covid proper...Carol looks COLD!!!!

We did meet outside again, which turned out not too bad.  I think the temp was close to 60!

Not everyone was cold...although, I didn't get a picture of Marty or I!  HA

Carol started us off with showing a Korean health notice given to her by her nephew, who was in quarantine when he arrived for a month trip.  No clue what it says but it's pretty cool looking!

Carol is also working on daily 'doodles' in between decision making on her new house being built and working on packing up her current home!  Not sure how she has time for anything else but glad she's keeping her hands in artwork!

Check out the little lamb, bug and doughnut!

These are really interesting and a great way to keep your mind and hands busy!

This poor picture is/was looking for a home!  If you have second thoughts about it, get with Carol!

Carol and Mary participated in a challenge at Design Works last year creating a collage of 'old ladies'.  They were made into note cards.  This is Carol's 'old lady'.

This is a group shot of some of the 'old lady' collage note cards.

And this is Mary's 'old lady'!  I love these!!!

Mary is busy with grands and great grands as usual.  She is our idol for sure when it comes to being Grandma of the year!  And she has also been doing quite a lot of canning!

Mary is constantly making masks for her family/friends and whoever needs them!  She had a great tip for the ear holder - use the cotton loops from a Potholder Loom kit.  They sell the loops separate at craft stores.  Mary said she uses a 5" cut loop and makes sure the loop fabric is smooth.  Some loops aren't that nice.  Good idea for using the loop for the ear strap.

Design Works has their next yearly challenge, which you could pick from 3 suggestions...I don't remember what the 3 were but Mary is picking the "finish a UFO".  she has this panel she started working on.  We suggested she cut the entire piece up and put back together again!

Mary is known for cutting up her quilts so this is a perfect suggestion!  Can't wait to see what she does!

Lois Ann is keeping in shape by bike riding 5 days a week and walking with hubby!  You never know when she may show up at your door step on her bike!

She also was riding each Wednesday at the Waterford Racing track.  They would have 20 or 40 minute time events, which LA was coming in at 21 mph (5 laps).  Pretty good, right...but on September 9th, our girl finished with a 22.9 for one hour timed lap!  Woohoo!!!  And she beat out all these men too!!

Lois Ann is also chasing away varmints from her garden so she is able to can all those vegetables and fruit!  Plus, she's taking some great pictures of the sunflowers in her garden Kendal planted last year and some of the animals planted as well!

I can see this one made into a quilt or a large painting by Lois Ann!

Each of her photos are so unique!

If you want to look at more pictures Lois Ann has taken, check out her facebook page here or you can do a search in FaceBook on Luisa Fulton.

Of course, Lois Ann is still drawing and painting with watercolor!

These were done while LoisAnn and Kendal were up north celebrating their anniversary!

How beautiful!

Love seeing LA's work!

And in her 'spare time', she is making masks!

Marty found two books at her local dollar store!  Who knew they had books.  This quilt book is really interesting and the patterns are very modern!  Good purchase, Marty!

I looked inside this one too and if you are a weaver or have some cloth there are quite a few cool patterns for shawls and coats!

Marty has been busy finishing this night stand for her bedroom!  She used marble papers she made 18 years ago to cover the front of the drawers.   She ended up using Mod Podge for the 'glue' and coating.  How cool did this turn out!!!  Nicely done!

Marty found this little card inside an old book.  She gave it to Mary.  It was signed "Martha".

This is an interesting article that was in the Flint Journal recently.  You may have to click on the picture to read the different lists, but Marty did participate with a group but I don't remember which list she used.   You take pictures of each item in the chosen list.  Clever isn't it!

These are my 12"x12" challenge blocks I'm working on.  The leaf print is something I did last summer making my own stencil from a piece of wall paper!  Holds up better than freezer paper!  I'm hand stitching each leaf.

This is a paper collage from one of my cropped designs.  This was a lesson from a class earlier this year.

Another lesson was taking a small photo and creating a collage from the picture.  We also added more pattern or extended the pictures using Gelato crayons, artist pencils (I just purchased a set of 60 Faber-Castell Polychromos pencils, which I love!) and Neocolor 1 crayons.

You can see the two photo's I used in this piece.  The photo on the left was printed on photo paper and the right side was printed on regular copy paper.

Again, printed on copy paper and addition of leaves I used any and everything in my crayon drawer!  HA  The background is a piece I stamped with a hand made stamp I made from a picture of a curved window, then I painted dye on top.

This was a piece that challenged me.  You can see the water picture I started with.  It's a picture of the Mill Pond in downtown Goodrich  I took on a walk...I'm happy with how it came but it was a tough/good lesson for me.

This was my piece I created in a Zoom online class called Instant Paper Cloth with Margarita K. (she writes the articles for QA - Carol showed her cheesecloth technique at our July meeting).  The class was really interesting and the paper is so easy to stitch through.

We used tissue paper for the vase and flower and then stitched over lines and added stitching lines where we wanted on our IPC background.  I just put some stitching on the left side and bottom right.

I finished two more shawls.  This is a beaded one by Laura Nelkin.

This is another lace pattern by Laura.  I still don't know how she can design these!  This one started off with 11 stitches!!!

This was a stencil collage piece we did in Hilary's online class.  The background is a paper I made a few months ago with stamping; the green was a traced stencil that I cut out areas with Xacto knife; I didn't like it as a whole piece so I sliced it and attached to a canvas.  I think it's around a 11"x 14" size canvas.  Check out my thimble pad in use.

This is a 'thimble pad' I made and which I used to attach my piece above to the canvas.  Here is a link to the video on how to make one.  It's very easy and quick to make!  And it works!

These are photo's that we added/extended the photo outside the photo edges.  I really enjoyed this process.

This was a little challenge on the tulips as I had to extend the table the flowers were sitting on!

I've found a new photo transfer paper, which is really nice to use on fabric and on paper!  Doesn't crack on the fabric, which is nice.  And if you want an even lighter transfer, you can remove the printed photo from the paper backing and iron directly on your paper/fabric (using parchment on top!).  Good price too.

Here's a link to the Heat Erasable Fabric Marking Pens I found.  They work great and a set contains four different colors (red, blue, black and white).  Good price too ($9.99)...I sound like an ad!  No, I'm not an employee for Madam Sew...just Suzie Secretary for our Aussome group!!!  Until Next Month!

July Covid-19 Meeting 2020

That darn old Covid-19 can't stop us, can it!!  Weather was quite nice...actually, a little chilly!  Did I say "chilly"?  With our 90 degree weather, this was a nice change...and, as always, so good to get together and share and inspire each other!

Carol showed her latest journal she was working on at our last meeting.  The pic on the left are some drawings to put in the 'F' page and the 'colons' on the border are for her page 'C'.

Carol played with Margarita Korioth's  printing on cheesecloth from the June/July 2020 QA magazine.  Really cool!  Margarita has written several articles for QA - April/May 2018 is one she did for using magazines/papers.

Here is article from QA

You should be able to click on the picture to read.

One of Carol's paintings from Creative Weekend workshop.

Another drawing/painting from the Creative Workshop Carol did!  He is adorable!!!  I believe the instructor for this class was Jenniffer Steck.

I believe this too was from one of the Creative Workshops Carol did.  It's suppose to be an 'androgynous' drawing!

Appears Lois Ann has an unwanted guest in her garden!  But at least you're feeding him!!!

Only Lois Ann could be in a car and drawing and painting on their way up north!!!!

The center pic is a piece Lois Ann painted to establish her base colors.  The drawings on either side are how she finished the piece!  Beautiful!

Lois Ann has been using painter's type tape to block of borders for her paintings.  Clever!!!

Marty showed some of her 'found' fabrics.  She's not sure where or how she created them but we all thought they were great!

Marty has also participated in the Creative Workshops last weekend and learning to focus on daily practice of her art work.  She also has finished some pillows for her house as well as she finished her 'Hello Beautiful' hanging piece she showed last month.  We'll see this piece sometime this fall or winter when we meet at her house.

Marty showed a beautiful piece of fabric she purchased in Hawaii.  It's really very pretty and we all had to determine how they did the layering of the sun prints!
Marty also mentioned a book she recommended called 'Ribbons of Scarlet'.

I gave each a piece of Flexie Fush adhesive.  I did a blog post you can read here, in which I compared some other fusible products.  Mary, I'll save yours for our next meeting!

Some collages using my painted papers - these were based on some crops I did.  5.5"x8.5"

Some crops (2"x3")...two on the right were based on the design (left)  I did using stencils (9"x12")

Again, a stencil design and two crops based on this design.

My design is a screen print I did on paper last summer.  Three crops are 2"x3"

No, I'm not getting into drawing...just trying to create designs/drawings to use for cropping!
Far right is new yarn for another lace shawl - project for next winter.  Middle Beadkerchief was yarn leftover from my lace shawl.  Brown yarn on left will be a larger Beadkerchief.  Yep, I'm enjoying this knitting using Portuguese Knitting method! Check out the YouTubes for this method here!

A table runner I'm using to practice free motion quilting...I made those squares a few years ago!

If you're interested in some other textile/painting/printing YouTubes, check out Hilary Beattie's YouTube channel here.  You'll be busy for months!  HA  Don't forget, you can click on any of the bold/underlined words to go directly to that web site.

Look forward to meeting again next month and seeing all the great work you all are doing!
